Who are we?

University of Silesia Society of Physics Students is a group of people fascinated by Physics and the natural sciences. While we're all interested in Physics the SPS organizational profile is centered around this subject, our activities are by no way limited by this. In fact, we often talk about culture, arts, politics and everything else that we find interesting at the moment.

While the majority of our members is studying Physics, there are those of us who are working on a double degree or are following an individual curriculum at Individual Science Studies.

What do we do?

In the SPS we do many things, some of them serious, some of them not so much :) We organize student conferences and work on interesting projects. We present the results of our work and studies on regular seminars. We try to popularize Physics among both university and high school students and the general society. From time to time, we also organize trips to different scientific institues in Poland and abroad.

We support the ideas of the Free Software movement and of free access to knowledge. Some of our members take active part in development of Open Source projects, others are editors of the Polish edition of Wikipedia.

Among all this, we always find time for some fun, interesting discussions and the ritual of tea drinking in our headquarters.

Our history

The US SPS was founded in 1970. For 30 years, it had its ups and downs. Unfortunately, during the period between the years 1990 and 2001, the students lost their interest in our organization. This is what we today humorously call "The Narcosis". In 2001, the US SPS was reactivated by a group of young and ambitious Physics students.

Since its reactivation, we have organized the annual National Conference of Physics Student Societies, also known as the "Scientific Picnic". The conference makes it possible for us to get to know each other and to meet some of the best Polish scientists. We understand the enormously important role that social networking plays in the scientific world today, which is why we take the organization of these conferences very seriously.
